This place is in downtown Rio de Janeiro. It's officially named "Mercado Popular" (Popular Market) BUT it is well know by Brazilians as: CAMELODROMO. Kind of a name like: DisneyLand. The place nickname is derivated from two words; Camelo and Dromo. Camelo is a person (man or woman) that works illegally, that sells products without paying taxes to the governement. Normally all the merchandise sold here comes from Paraguay, another country southwest of Brazil. The Camelo guys go there to buy all kind of things and smuggle it into Brazil and here they sell it very cheap, without paying customs taxes. That's why that nickname was given to that market; Camelodromo, like "the Kingdom of the Camelos". A market where you can buy anything that you want, order anything from a cd to a CD-ROM drive, from a cellular phone to a 42" plasma TV, from high-end DVD players for cars to Nikon digital cameras, and clothes, appliances, toys. Anything you want, you can get here for a very low price. In other words, it is an Official Popular Market that sells illegal smuggled products. And it is so big that it takes 4 (four) blocks in downtown, close to all the big company buildings. All the tents are open 6 days a week, from 7am to 8pm. Do not try to understand. It is just what it is.
