Ellisboro is a small town nestled in the Qu'appelle valley, 15 kilometers north of Wolseley. It was established in 1883, and was home to the first rural high school in Saskatchewan, an Anglican and a United Church, and a small collection of houses. It is now primarily a historical location, with a cairn to the pioneers of this area erected in 1980. More about the history of Ellisboro can be found at www.ourroots.ca.

The Cemetery at Ellisboro is located on a plateau halfway up the north ridge of the qu'appelle valley. The first burial in the cemetery is of George Ellis, November 18, 1888. The cemetery has three levels, and this panorama was taken from the hedge between the first two levels, and the third can be seen in the distance down the hill.

"a consecrated place, a place where sacred things are kept" - Our history and ancestory is one of our most sacred posessions, and cemeteries are where we honour and uphold the the histories that have shaped who we are. They link us to our past and guide us toward our future. They offer us a quiet place to sit and meditate, and remind us of the loved ones who have passed before us.

In the cold and snow of winter, when the world seems dead or resting, the cemetery is more quiet, more still than at any other time. And as the winter solstice passes, we are reminded that the days will soon get longer and the world will, eventually, awake again.
