A huge research institution such as the University of California can be a stressful environment for students. In 1928 Mrs. May Treat Morrison made a donation to the university to build a library specifically as a sanctuary for students wishing to escape the pressures of the academic program. The Morrison Library, actually a room within the main library complex, has a collection of fiction, travel guides, and recorded music. Textbooks and studying are prohibited. It is comfortably furnished and always quiet, with the genteel air of gentleman's club. It has been a favored retreat of Berkeley students for three-quarters of a century.
