Although there is no shortage of beautiful gardens in my area, I had a hard time finding the motivation to shoot someone else's when my own yard needs so much attention. We were very ambitious five years ago when we began to transform our lot full of weeds into a backyard retreat. The result is an enormous "to do" list each summer. I'm still learning and spend a fair amount of time fixing past mistakes as well as on general maintenance. The summer growing season here is short. The ground is usually too wet to be worked until May and the first frosts often come in September. Gardening doesn't really start in earnest until June. The pano was shot in a part of the yard that is still under construction. Since I had some extra space I thought I'd try a sunflower house. In mid May, I planted giant sunflowers in an oval shape. Colored sticks with the names of neighborhood kids helped mark the perimeter. It's not too impressive at the moment, but in August I expect the sunflowers to have grown up to 10 feet tall, forming the "walls" of the house.
