Forty kilometers of road througth the mountains separate Saint-Louis, on the shore of the island, from Cilaos village. The road was built, beginning from both ends, from 1927 to 1932. There are several bridges, three tunnels, impressive cliffs and this surprising loop ; made by engineer Elysée Hoareau. After the road was made, the journey took only two hours by car instead of six to seven in the previous sedan-chair age.
