Prior to the advent of air travel, ships provided the only bridges between continents. Some luxury liners, such as the Queen Mary, also became virtual bridges between times of war and peace when they served as troop transports in WW II. As a historical note, the modern bridge on a ship takes its name from a more literal open deck-spanning structure that once traversed the width of a ship and allowed its captain to control the vessel from a good vantage point above the deck. The literal ship's bridge became an enclosed control space, retaining the name if not the form of a traditional bridge.
