The Tokyo Wan Aqua Line (Trans Tokyo Bay Highway) is one of Tokyo's most famous landmark. The links between tourist spot of Kisarazu in Chiba and central place of Kawasaki in Kanagawa are by a 15.1 kilometer toll highway, involved 9.5 kilometer tunnel, which is 60 meter deep from sea level and 4.4 kilometer bridge, which is 40.85 meter above sea level. Construction of the Tokyo Wan Aqua Line began in May, 1989. By May, 1997, dugging by the world's largest class shield machines with a diameter of 14.14 meter, all tunnle and bridge had met. After 31 years from its initial survey by the government, it took eight years and 1.45 trillion yen (13.2 billion dollar) to build and was opened on 18 December, 1997. Recommended for all visitors to the bridge is the Umi-hotaru parking area, artificial small island at the transition between the bridge and the tunnel. Inside the Umi-hotaru parking area is a wonderfull place. You can shop around regional goodies, meal in the food court or the restaurant, learn how this bridge was build, and see the 360 degree panorama of Tokyo bay, Yokohama city, and Mount Fuji at the observation deck.
