The campground is empty at mid-day because Yosemite Association volunteers are busy assisting the National Park Service resource management and science division in work projects around the park. The volunteers come from all over, donating a week at a time, and are bound by their love for this phenomenally beautiful place. Campers also recognize the dangers of living close to nature. The brown steel containers aren't for rubbish; they are bear-proof boxes for storing food, thereby protecting campers from the ursine visitors. There are many definitions of community, but shared values and interests can create the strongest of community bonds. The spirit of community remains even after camp is broken and the volunteers go their separate ways.
