The Olympíc Museum

Inauguration
On 23rd June 1993 by Adolf Ogi, President of the Swiss Confederation at the time, and Juan Antonio Samaranch, President of the International Olympic Committee, in the presence of the King and Queen of Spain.

Situation
A city with more than 300,000 inhabitants, Lausanne is situated in the heart of the French-speaking part of Switzerland, within half an hour of Geneva international airport. It is three hours and forty minutes from Paris by high-speed train and a two-hour drive from Germany and Italy.

Mission
To preserve the heritage of the Olympic Games as re -established by Baron Pierre de Coubertin in 1894. To put forward the ideals of Olympism and contribute towards the achievement of man’s highest aspirations. The Olympic Museum is a must for all those who are keen on sport and the Olympic Movement, those who are interested in history, culture and art and those who care about the future of our society. As Coubertin put it, "Olympism is a state of mind". For the Olympic Museum is, first and foremost, the world’s greatest centre of information on the Olympic Movement.

Awards
Meeting at Västeras in Sweden, the European Museum of the Year Award (EMYA) committee chose the Olympic Museum Lausanne as the winner of its 1995 award from among 45 candidates from fifteen countries.

Sculpture Garden
Before you enter the Museum building you have something to discover at your leisure: The Olympic Sculpture Garden, designed by the landscape architect José Lardet. Lardet's terraced fountain on the esplanade acts as a theatrical curtain opening onto the memory of Olympism and is a landmark in Ouchy. Displaying a fantastic view of Lake Geneva with the French Alps in the background, the park enjoys the mild climate of Lausanne which enables plants from the Mediterranean to grow here. There is a difference of 20 meters in height between the lakeside and the museum entrance. The main path has been designed to allow the visitors to walk up slowly while enjoying the plants, shady spots, ponds and fountains, as well as the various works of art. It is an interesting fact that this winding path, covering 420 meters, is the length of a modern Olympic stadium. Sculptures will accompany you as you take your stroll. They are the work of prestigious artists: Berrocal, Botero, Bugatti, Calder, Chillida, Folon, Graham, Mitoraj, Niki de Saint Phalle or Tàpies on a surface of 22,000 m2. And undoubtedly, when you next return, new sculptures will have been added.

The Panorama
This month of June of 2006 I had the opportunity to visit some of the cities of Switzerland (Geneva, Lausanne and Montreux). At the city of Lausanne at the entrance to the Olympic Museum I had the chance to take this panorama. There is a lot to see at this interactive picture: The Alps, the Geneva Lake, the Olympic flags, the entrance fountain, the main path to the building, some of the sculptures, the trees and even the top of the Olympic village. Also on the panorama you will find 3 colored arc structures. The green one shows with it's height the Olympic record for the male high jump event. The blue one, the Olympic record for the male triple jump discipline. And the last one in yellow color the Olympic record for the male long jump competition.

If you have the chance, visit this beautiful destination.

Hope you like the view !!!
