The“Kyoto Higashiyama Hanatouro” has since 2003 been the event which represents the arrival of spring in Kyoto.

Over 2400 lights are installed in the promenade road, about 2.4 km from Shoren-in Temple to Kiyomizu Temple, through Maruyama Park and Yasaka Shrine.

The lights are made in 6 ways: Kiyomizu-yaki pottery; bambo; polished Kitayama cedar; masonry; a metal; and Japanese lacquer.

This is a good place in Hanatouro, the Hokan-ji temple which is called “Yasaka-no-to (Yasaka Tower). It is said that Shotoku-Taishi founded it in 592 A.D. It has a history of over 1400 years, older than Heian-kyo (original Kyoto founded in 794 A.D.) capital.

It is a landmark of the Higashiyama area. People living in Kyoto visit one time at least, not just the sightseers. This is the best spot in which to feel the unique atmosphere of Kyoto.
