The name of the club whose canoes you shot is Hui Nalu. They are fiberglass canoes, and yes they primarily practice in them, but race in the better ones during the distance season. (Regatta season they are required to race only in Koa canoes). The Koa canoe for Hui Nalu Canoe Club is locked up in the Canoe Halau (a longhouse used for storage) in the shot.
They are approx. 45 ft. in length (varies a little bit depending on specific model of canoe). They are very good canoes, and carry/race with six paddlers. While Koa canoes can be up to and exceed $100,000, the best fiberglass canoes cost about $8,000 - $10,000 completely rigged (including ama (outrigger), iakos (spars) and neoprene cover for racing).
The Hui Nalu Canoe Club has about 300 members (men, women, and children), and are perennially among the best clubs in the Oahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Assn. (OHCRA). Regatta season runs from May thru August, and distance season runs from Sept thru Nov. highlighted by the Molokai Channel Long Distance World Championships.
