Mountains and quiet in Gougane Barra Peaceful, isolated and yet magnificient. Near Inchigeela, Co Cork, nestled in the mountains of the National Forest Park is the lake where the River Lee starts its journey to Cork Harbour. A nature trail and walks for all levels await you in this beautiful Forest Park maintained by the Forestry Service (Coillte). In the lake, a tiny island can be reached by a causeway. This is where St Fin Barr, patron Saint and founder of Cork City, chose to have his hermitage in the 7th century. This was his Sanctuary. Nothing remains of the original buildings, but a small modern Oratory can now be found there. As Gougane Barra is located in the heart of 'An Gaeltacht', one of the many areas in Ireland where Irish is spoken as a community language, signposts are mostly in Gaelic!
