High atop Rocky Butte, an extinct cinder cone and part of the Boring Lava Flow, in the city of Portland, Oregon, lies Joseph Wood Hill Park, which provides a spectacular 360 degree view. This photo is right over a pedestal of markers pointing to various nearby mountains. The closest, Mt. Hood, you can just make out exactly behind that damn tree.

This park was built in the mid 1930s as a WPA project, and named for Joseph Wood Hill, whose name was also that of the adjacent Hill Military Academy, which closed in the 1950s.

The walls of this top area, as well as nearby rock faces are popular climbing routes. Aside from climbing, the park is a hot spot for wedding pictures, late night drinking, and excellent cell phone reception, not necessarily in that order.

Directly above was a solar halo, which had been happening a lot! You can also make out the shadow of a contrail on the cirrus clouds near the halo.
