This pano shows how the battle is being lost between two strong communities in this country of long coast and seafarers through thousands of years. As you can see the community of wooden boats are losing the battle vs Tupperware boats, as they are often are called by the wooden boat community ;) 50 years ago there was almost only boats made from wood here. 25 years ago it was maybe 50/50, and now I could only count 5 wooden boats vs hundreds of plastics. The place is Kuholmen marina in Bertesbukta, one of very many marinas in Kristiansand. They all show the same "evolution". I guess Darwin was right with his "survival of the fittest"? Glassfiber has admittedly proven to be much more durable than the traditionalists predicted and warned about. And they require a lot less maintenance. At the same time this evolution is marking an end to another long time tradition. Many a wooden boat has ended its life on huge bonfires celebrating the summer solstice (called St.Hans or Jonsok here) 23rd of June. At least that is a tradition where plastic boats can't compete ;)
