Hirschstetten Flower Gardens
The municipal gardens experience
„The former 'reserve gardens' of the city of Vienna have become flower gardens that are known beyond the city borders for the visible result of gardening skill“ Franz Karl Effenberg, the District Chairman of Donaustadt
Hirschstetten, a part of Donaustadt, is the location of the Hirschstetten Flower Gardens,a municipal horticultural garden that provides 5 million plants every year for the decoration of our city and offers a number of gardening services. In addition to these very important tasks, the Flower Gardens have in the past 2 years intensively pursued the objective of making the Viennese population more sensitive to the urban environment and ecology, with an emphasis on information, advisory services, animation and an educational mandate. Since the start of the programme in March 2002, 180,000 visitors have taken advantage of the facilities on offer. The establishment of a show garden, permanent exhibitions, events and workshops are important integral parts of this new corporate philosophy. An area of 60,000 m² on the horticultural garden premises that were formerly used for market-gardening has been redesigned as a themed garden landscape - the Florarium - and has been turned into a public park. In combination with the horticultural garden, it has become an attractive, informative and awareness-building adventure space. The District Office of Donaustadt has requested that the area be redesignated as a "recreational park area" in the land use plan. The corporate philosophy of the gardens is aimed at fostering the identification of the urban population with their city's green areas, which represents a decisive factor for the quality of a "Green City".
