Hardwick Hall 'more glass than wall' was built between 1590 and 1597 for Bess of Hardwick - at the time England's most powerful and wealthy woman after Queen Elizabeth 1st. Bess lived at the hall from 1597 until her death in 1608.

The gardens are laid out in a series of walled courtyards and include herbs, herbaceous borders, orchards and grass walkways walled with hornbeam hedges - a lovely peaceful place to explore.

Hardwick Hall is now owned by the National Trust and is open to the public. It's just off junction 29 of the M1 - well worth a visit.
