Water was and is important for using it a source of energy. As ist was centuries ago the watermill, it is today the barrage, as a source for energy and also as water reservoir for the bigger cities.

The mountains as a sort of collector of water are very important for that aspect. Also the deep valleys are an ideal landscape for building barrages. In summer when the snow melts many water is available and is collected in many barrages in the alps.

This panorama shows the Marmorera barrage, 1627 m above the sea level in the Swiss.
