Most impressing gothical architecture are without a doubt the magnificent city gates, which gave Neubrandenburg its surname - city of the four gates. In the northeast is the oldest and best preserved gate - the Friedländer Gate. Around 1300 works began to replace the wooden defence systems by solid buildings. During this time the Friedländer main gate was build, individual late Roman elements can be detected.

The 8 meters high "Zingel", which has 14 meters of diameter and 4 meters of wall thickness, is remarkable. This solid building, in the second half 15. Century constructed, was connected by 2m high walls to the pre-gate. The semicircular bastion protected the gate against large-caliber fire arms.
