Since the Industrial Revolution, half of the carbon dioxide emitted to the atmosphere has been absorbed by the ocean, and acidification of sea water is progressing. The Earth's increasing carbon dioxide levels might result in significant losses of the world's oysters. 加茂湖は新潟県で最大の湖であり唯一のかん水湖。元は淡水で1903年頃に湖水の氾濫を防ぐため開削。加茂湖では約90人の漁業者が牡蠣を育てており、漁業協同組合では2002年か毎年「牡蠣の森づくり」事業を実施しているうです。豊かな森の腐葉土に含まれる栄養素が海に流れ、牡蠣の生育を助けるからです。 一方、地球規模では産業革命以後、大気に放出された二酸化炭素(CO2)の約半分は海洋に吸収され、海水の酸性化が進み貝類にも悪影響が現れているようです。地球の増加する二酸化炭素濃度は世界中の牡蠣の著しい損失に帰着するかもしれません。
