熊本県の北部にあるこのダムは異なる２つのタイプで構成されている複合ダムです。これは地質にあったダムのタイプを選択したためです。このような複合ダムは日本でも数が少なく、九州では竜門ダムだけです。ダムの高さは約１００メートル、貯水量は４１５０００００立方メートルあります。撮影時季節は冬から春へ、気温も上がり地表の水分蒸発が盛んになり大気中の水蒸気が増加した結果、かすみが発生し遠くの景色がよく見えなくなりました。日本ではこの時期のこのようなかすみを春がすみと呼んでいます。
