January 18th, 2007, saw the low pressure system "Kyrill" moving across Europe, bringing rain and unusually heavy winds with it. During the night of 18th to 19th, the storm front passed over Bavaria. Quite a number of trees were uprooted by the sheer force of the air. Roads and railway tracks were blocked for hours. All of a sudden, newspapers were full of reports talking about how the widespread spruce monoculture may not be the best choice.
Two months later, walking through the forest, there are still lots of areas that look like this one. Over the course of the summer, we'll see whether the bark beetle is going to take advantage of the mild winter and the lots of dead wood all around...
