The movie opens looking at the American Mastodon (Mammut Americanum). This and the other mammals in the 'Ice Age Mammals' exhibit at the Canadian Museum of Nature, Victoria Memorial Museum Building in Ottawa, lived long before the national borders of Canada, Mexico and the United States were established. The American Mastodon came to North America from Africa 15 millon years ago and roamed the continent from the Canadian Arctic to central Mexico. There were no international, provincial or state borders to contend with. The only border that mattered to the mammals in the late Pilocene/Pleistocene period was the southern limit of the ice cap covering North America.
