I shot this on a field trip during the IVRPA conference last summer. I liked it the best of my Alcatraz panoramas, but the theme then was Community, so I submitted another one for the Summer event. This is to me a very sobering view of the wages of sin: a windowless, barred room measuring 5 feet by 9 feet (1.5 x 2.74 meters). At Alcatraz, cages like this were stacked three high, 56 to a row. Alcatraz Prison was closed down by Bobby Kennedy in the 60s after having served as home to an impressive group of the baddest bad guys. The island was added to the Golden Gate National Recreation Area in the early 70s, and is one of the most popular sites in the National Park System, with over a million visitors annually.
