A Tribute to Ch. Darwin & F. de Goya 'The Sleep Of Reason Produces Monsters' is one of the most celebrated engravures by the Spanish painter Goya (just a Google search away). Goya himself felt quite involved with the Enlightment, a movement that by that time was trying to free Europe from the Middle Ages's wild superstitions -like witchcraft- heavily supported by Churches that used them to keep their political and economic privileges and frequently looked at free thinking and Reason -including this one's daughter, Science- as a threat to themselves. Unbelievable as it may seem in such a scientific research depending world as ours, the conflict between the two books that God -according to good old Galileo- wrote, Nature and Bible- breaks out again. Four centuries ago Galileo had to remind the Catholic Church that the Bible was not a scientific book, but a religious one and that its words are not meant to be understood literally. Two centuries later Charles Darwin's Evolution Theory by means of Natural Selection was wildly attacked. And nowadays, the State of Kansas wants their students to be 'stimulated' to reject those theories scientists have so treacheourously imposed all over the world in favour of an 'Intelligent Design'. So the Witches are back. As a teacher I feel concerned by this issue and I thought that there was something to be done, not only in, but out of the classroom too. And here come my pano and the WWP. With it I want to show my sympathy to the Flying Spaghetti Monster's guys (you may see the monster one student draw in the blackboard), and support them in their fight against Intelligent Designs and the like (see the FSM's site on www.venganza.org). So: THE MONSTERS ARE NOT THE STUDENTS , my kids are just fantastic, they even accepted enthusiastically to accord me the time of one of their breaks to shoot the pics. The bottom Greek words paraphrase the ancient Greek poet Hesiod's: 'In The Beginning There Was Chaos'.
