The Beacon at Baltimore, which marks the harbour entrance, is one of my favorite spots: isolated, beautiful views, beaten by the elements on stormy days, yet so peaceful, happy and magestic.

The sight of the Beacon must have warmed the heart of many a fisherman and sailor returning to the sanctuary of harbour after some time at sea. High above the channel between the mainland and the lighthouse on Sherkin Island, the Beacon is visible from afar and offers spectaculor views of the area.

Located 13kms South West of Skibbereen, Baltimore is a popular summer destination, a fishing port and the base for the southernmost RNLI lifeboat in Ireland.

It is also the point of departure for visits to Sherkin Island, with its Marine Station and Cape Clear Island, with its Story Telling Festival and Bird Observatory. Slightly further out is the famous Fastnet Rock and lighthouse. Listen out for mention of it on the BBC Shipping Forecast.
