North of metropolitan Vancouver a major highway leads up the broad glacial valley from Squamish at the head of Howe Sound to the ski resort complex at Whistler. North of there the valley narrows, as does the road. It is here that one of the most perfectly formed waterfalls is to be found. A small provincial park protects and affords access to Brandywine Falls, down a short trail from the parking area. Brandywine Falls leaps far out from the cliff edge over a deep recess, hissing into deep water in a dark pool 216 feet below. The rock is a dark irregularly fractured basalt, contrasting with the silvery purity of the falls. Tradition says the falls was named for the payoff on a bet, between two surveyors over the exact height of the falls. One wagered a bottle of brandy, the other a bottle of wine. |
