The newest of the Berkeley campus' major open spaces, Memorial Glade sits atop the underground extension of the main library. This area, once the university arboretum, was for over 40 years covered with a row of "temporary" buildings, named T-1, T-2, etc. Built to handle the surge of enrollment following World War II, most of the T-buildings were demolished in 1993 when excavation of the library pit began. The last was removed in 1995 and now not a trace remains. Under the great lawn there lies a huge five story building, housing the main library stacks. Only the glass-roofed light wells hint at its presence.
In this view the Doe Library dominates the view, taking up the entire south side of the glade. The Bancroft Library is an eastward extension of the main library building, with the Campanile (Sather Tower) peeking over, and Le Conte in the distance. Monstrous Evans Hall towers over the east end, with McLaughlin to its left. McCone Hall, home of the Geography department, rises due north, flanked by forested Observatory Hill. Cross Campus Drive descends along the north side of the glade, disappearing into the few remaining trees of the old arboretum. Moffitt Library completes the circle.
