Pygmy Forest, Mendocino California

Pygmy Forest, Ecological Staircase, Mendocino, California
March 1976

This image of the pygmy forest includes people for scale. Because of soil characteristics, and a hardpan that precludes penetration by roots or water, trees on this site are dwarfed. The same species in the surrounding forest off the pygmy soils, attain full height.
