The name of Riyadh means "the gardens". In the central desert of Nedj, there was here an oasis with traditional houses made of earth. This site of Riyadh has been chosen by king Abdulaziz al Saud in 1932 to host the capital city of the new state he founded. A huge trend of modernization has led to the destruction or dereliction of the old earth made houses until a recent date. A preservation policy has begun to save the last witnesses of the past.
