Jiddah has been surpassed by the capital city of Riyadh (1.5 million inhabitants in 1997) and has lost its political and diplomatic role. But it is still an active city of 1.1 million people with business, trade and welcome functions. Each year, 2 million Moslem pilgrims are transiting through Jiddah.
