Hunting and fishing are age-old practices in the western United States. Nonetheless, they have grown increasingly controversial as changes in the population makeup of the West itself move forward. There can be little doubt that, as management system, hunting and fishing have been important in the history of the West. But whether they will continue to be so is another matter. In fact, a public interest in such activities has long provided an economic reason to preserve and protect wildlife. Perhaps no longer, as anti-hunting sentiment builds.
