Ranchstead
outside Vernal, Utah (1987)
Livestock ranching needs (and by Federal Law is required to have) a property base, which become the "home ranch" of the outfit. This ranchstead (equivalent to a homestead, in the old 160 acre land division system) near Vernal, Utah, is a suitable example. While only a hundred or so acres, it is well maintained, and represents a vast investing of time, money, effort, ambition, and a commitment to stewardship. This is not, however, always the case with livestock ranches, and it is the variation that causes the greatest problem.
