Oldest town
San Luis, Colorado (1986)
Boasting of its history as "the oldest town in Colorado," San Luis is without a doubt a historic place. That has not contributed especially to its size or wealth; it remains a sleepy and quiet community at the southeastern margin of the vast San Luis Valley. Founded in the 1700s, it is rather later in establishment than some of the towns just to the south in Northern New Mexico, but San Luis residents and neighbors hold the earliest water rights in Colorado, a state that takes these things seriously.
