The small community of New Idria, in the Coast Range of California outside of Hollister, was once a center for mining in the State. Although relatively little mining has been done there in the last hundred plus years, New Idria was at its peak well before the Gold Rush in California of the 1840s and 60s. It was actually a Spanish and Mexican operation, part and parcel of the New Almaden mine that lies to the north. New Idria, in a highly erodible and asbestos-rich section of California, remains today a major source of pollutants, and is actually one of California's Superfund cleanup sites.
