Tony Hillerman's remarkable novels have made Jim Chee, Joe Leaphorn, and the Navajo Tribal Police bywords in American arts and letters. The Indian Country map, produced by the American Automobile Association, is the most popular that the Auto Club distributes, and little wonder, with the country the map reveals. But beyond the fiction and the maps is the reality of the Navajo Reservation, the largest Indian Nation in the United States, and home to roughly half (200,000) of the approximately 400,000 Navajo in the U.S. The crimes are less often murders and witchings as public drunkeness and domestic violence; in this, the Res parallels the real world beyond northeastern Arizona and the Four Corners country.
