Discovery Bay
Discovery Bay, Sacramento delta, CA (1986)
The search for recreation, the good life, and a place for inexpensive housing has produced some odd bedfellows, but few so curious as Discovery Bay, a "planned" community (of sorts) not far from Lodi, in the delta of the Sacramento River. About two hours by car from San Francisco, Discovery Bay is a recreation-oriented community, entirely artificial, built on peat soils, with excavated rivers, channels, and homes that are, by local standards, quite expensive. But there is a golf course as part of the the development, and you can boat to the first tee. Such are the ways of modern California; damn the commute, full speed ahead.
