Costilla
Costilla, New Mexico (1986)
Only a relatively short distance north of Taos, New Mexico, and the heady tourism that prevails there lies Costilla, New Mexico. Vitually all of the town is evident here. But on the hillside in the distance lies the dignified "C," an emblem of the town, put up by residents who obviously revel in better times. The fortunes of many of New Mexico's towns are little better than those of Costilla. Although tourism and recreation has provided alternative economies for Taos, Santa Fe, and environs, many of New Mexico's communities, and especially those with a largely Hispanic population, remain wedded to a small stock-holder and farming economy, which is high on prestige but relatively low on ready cash.
