Northern California - Klamath Mountains and North Coast Ranges

The rivers on the north coast of California, the Smith and Klamath, are famous for their steelhead and salmon fishing. Both these fishes are anadromous: they breed in freshwater but live their lives at sea. In the fall when river flows increase there is a sudden surge of fish returning to breed in the streams where they were born.
