Northern California - The Redwood Highway

One of the finest redwood groves, right at the junction of two forks of the Eel River, has been named for the founders of the Save the Redwoods League. This particular spot was named for the Mahans, a couple who discovered that logging had begun here, and raised the alarm among their friends. Logging stopped long enough for private donations and state funds to be gathered, and the Dyerville Flats were purchased for the state park system.
