| Northern California - Mount Lassen, Pit River, and Modoc Plateau | |||
| Acres of sulfurous steam vents, hot springs, boiling pools, and bubbling mud pots attest to the continuing volcanic activity of ancient Mount Mazama, predecessor of Mount Lassen. It is known as Bumpass Hell, for its discoverer, who managed to boil one of his legs when he broke through a thin crust over a hot spring. Now visitors stay on the safety of the boardwalks. | |||
