| The Golden Gate, strategic entrance to San Francisco Bay, has been fortified since Spanish times. During the second world war gun emplacements were built here, partly underground, for giant 16-inch artillery. These guns could shoot a 1000 pound projectile over the horizon. But the rapidly changing war situation decreed that the guns were installed on battleships instead, and none ever reached the emplacments on the Golden Gate headlands. | |||
