McCone Hall, formerly the Earth Sciences Building, stands just north of Memorial Glade, at the crest of Observatory Hill.
Dominating the view are, left to right, Evans Hall, the Campanile, the Main Library complex, and Haviland Hall. The grassy swale, Memorial Glade, lies over the underground extension to the library, with the flat roof of Moffit Library to its right,
In the distance can be seen the skyline of Oakland, and the crest of the Santa Cruz Mountains, 20 to 40 miles away. Due west is the Golden Gate and, further north, Mount Tamalpais in Marin county.
McCone Hall is home to the official Berkeley weather station. Wind and rainfall are recorded on the roof, while temperatures are measured in the oak grove, 90 feet below.
