The Berkeley campus, dating back to 1873, is graced with many fine trees. Though each year a few are lost, usually to construction and its side effects, enough have survived to maintain the park-like setting for which the campus is widely known.
The most prominent tree in this view is a venerable gingko, just assuming its spectacular fall color, a clear bright yellow. Behind it are a row of redwoods, planted along the north branch of Strawberry Creek. Around the corner of the building a gnarled olive tree can be seen silhuoetted in the late afternoon light.
The marble entrance to Giannini Hall is just behind the camera. This building was endowed by A.P. Giannini, founder of San Francisco's Bank Of Italy, now the Bank of America.
