Underground tunnels are dug to transport water, maybe over 40 miles, collected from the base of wetter mountains and delivered to drier basins to provide water for irrigation and domestic use. These tunnels, called karezes, have supplied a significant portion of consumptive use of water in Afghanistan for many centuries. The mounds result from numerous vertical shafts used by workers to keep the water flowing. |
