On the Road to Tashkent
Afghanistan

The south side of Salang Pass. A major highway from Kabul to Tashkent in the former Soviet Union, now Uzbekistan, passes through a tunnel at 11,000 feet, about two miles long, underneath the twin peaks in the picture. It is the only main road in the country kept open for winter travel.
