In the little neighborhood market of Ksibtnhas in Marrakech, we are looking at a vegetable seller who has brought in a small cart of carrots, zucchinis, and onions. He may have come directly from the country with his own produce, or he may be a small-time dealer in produce who goes to the city market every morning and buys a load of vegetables to sell in the neighborhood. His method of transportation is a donkey (in fact the donkey is in the image, bottom left, but the animal is feeding and bent down). -What scale of economic activity does the produce man represent? Neighborhood women are looking for the best price. They are ruthless bargainers, and no price is fixed until some discussion has taken place. The women in the center of the picture are probably price-shopping among vendors for the best price on something like carrots and onions. Moroccan women typically wear an overgarment, called the djellaba, which you see here in blue and grey. Some women are veiled; others are not. It's a matter of personal preference. |
