| Among the Berbers of the High Atlas mountains, the herding of sheep and goats is also a vital part of their economy. In this Berber family, you see some of the animals in the corral that adjoins most houses. In cold winter weather, the animals are brought into the corral for protection against the cold; they are pastured out in the nearby area during the day. The young lad you see here will spend his day with the sheep and goats: he is a shepherd.
During the summer months, he may spend several weeks alone with the animals far away from home. They are then in the highest pastures for the summer months. In winter, the flocks are at the lower elevations, such as the village, where there is some pasture all year 'round. Although limited in its scope here, among the Mgoun tribe, these patterns of uphill grazing in summer and downslope grazing in summer are termed transhumance |
