Terraced fields
Imlil, High Atlas Mountains

In midsummer, the terraces of the Ait Mizane have been planted to a second crop: corn. The corn is just emerging at this time.

You are looking at a swath of agricultural terraces. These have been painstakingly built out from the mountain slope bybuilding rock walls to hold the soil and then the soil built up through manuring and composting of plant material. The soils are quite rich as a result of this constant effort. At the same time, these terraces are part of an irrigation network that reaches into every field.

Field size is generally quite small--some fields are just a few square feet. The Berbers take what they can get from the mountain.

The trees are walnuts, a crop harvested in September.
