In Marrakech, the new part of town, known as Gueliz, is expanding rapidly. A kind of suburbanization--movement out of the central part of the city into new houses on what was previously farmland--is taking place. People have bought property on the edge of town and build single detached houses, such as these, that represent a new kind of housing in Morocco--big new individual houses on relatively small lots behind walls. They are always referred to as "villas." There is bus transportation available to them, but for the most part, people use their private cars to go from home to work or school or even shopping. Life here is very different from in the old part of town, the medina. Although this image shows an example of suburbanization in Marrakech, it is still different from suburbanization in America. -Note the configuration of houses on their lots. What is different here from in America? -Note also that the houses are walled, separated from each other and separated thus from the street. Give a few ideas on why these suburban "villas," as they are called, are walled. (Hint: it's not crime.) |
