| Inside the weekly market, or suq, in Asni, a small town at the foot of the High Atlas mountains.
On the left, a row of sellers offering fresh mint. They have brought the mint in from their nearby farm on donkey. The mint is covered with a damp cloth so that it will remain fresh. The nature of the Asni suq is intensely local. Most of the people strolling through the suq are from the local area, and many, if not most, of the sellers are too. They are selling off what surplus they have from their fields and herds of sheep and goats. A few crafts are for sale. People in the Asni area, and most of the mountains in Morocco, are Berber. That means that they speak Berber as their first language, or mother-tongue. Many will also know Arabic, or even French. You can see that the men in this phot are entirely in traditional dress--the overgarment known as the djellaba; the straw hat or the tight-fitting skullcap. Men also wear a kind of leather purse, called a shkara, across their front. Many also carry a cutlass on a rope, which is handy for any number of tasks, just like a jack-knife. |
